Suspect who 'ambushed' two Pennsylvania state troopers in shooting is dead, official says

The suspect who allegedly ambushed two Pennsylvania state troopers in a shooting Thursday afternoon has died, officials confirmed.

Police say the male suspect was armed with a rifle and was shot and killed after refusing to comply with police commands during an incident that left two Pennsylvania state troopers wounded. Officials confirm there is no remaining threat to the public.

Rep. Dan Meuser also confirmed on X that the suspect had been apprehended.

"Latest update from Susquehanna County: I've received word that, to the best of my knowledge, both troopers who were wounded are okay and are recovering," Meuser wrote.

"I'm sure your prayers made a difference. The shooter has now been apprehended and is in custody. No further details are available at this time," he continued.

The troopers, identified as Trooper Joseph Perechinsky and Trooper William Jenkins, sustained serious injuries as a result of the gunfire and were airlifted to a medical facility for emergency treatment.

Officials said both troopers are hospitalized and are currently listed in stable condition.

Both were shot while responding to a call in Susquehanna County, according to Governor Josh Shapiro, who shared the news during a public appearance in Bucks County.

Shapiro described it as an "active incident" and stated his intention to visit the area.

The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) are actively investigating the shooting, which occurred in the northeastern part of Susquehanna County. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area near Route 171, approximately five miles north of Thompson, citing ongoing safety concerns.

PSP noted that further details about the suspect will be released when available and that it remains an active and ongoing investigation.

"Lori and I are praying for these brave Troopers, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and every member of the State Police," Shapiro wrote in a post on X.

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., called it "awful news."

"Awful news out of Susquehanna," Fetterman wrote in a post on X. "We are waiting for more information on what happened and keeping these state troopers in our thoughts and prayers."

U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick, R-Pa., also acknowledged the incident, stating on social media: "Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge."

In a post on X, U.S. Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan Jr., said the troopers were in stable condition.
